Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha hi/lo begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in nearly all poker games.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.
Although it seems complex at first, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an amazing range of betting options and because you have many individuals battling for the high hand, as well as many battling for the low hand.
