Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played countless hours and do not win most times. He made some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and focus even more on poker.
The actual advancement in his abilities happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would often play against one another. He had access into a few of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard relocated to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
