Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were tough as he would play many hours and lost most times. He made some extra cash by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he might better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and focus attention even more on the game.

The real improvement in his game happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently wager against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his cunning thinking skills. He used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit holdem.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena today. He moved to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
