Omaha Hi Lo: General Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha Hi-Lo begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players often get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical notion in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, following a few hands you will be able to get the base nuances of play simply enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi-low provides an overwhelming collection of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have several players shooting for the high, and several trying for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
