Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants can get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an exciting assortment of betting options and because you have many individuals shooting for the high hand, and a few trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi low.
