Phil Ivey has been branded as the best poker contender on the planet by most of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before reaching the age of one. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to pickup everything he could about poker. He routinely told his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the detrimental comments from other people kill his ambition of becoming one of the greatest poker players in the world.
Phil started playing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial number of years for Phil were a learning period and winning was not a common thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he defeated quite a few of the better known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to dedication and an undying love for the game of poker. Phil says that he is picking up skills every day and is incredibly abashed about his success. He knows he makes blunders every single game of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Although Ivey has won some big tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a regular basis.
