Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he loved gambling on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games while playing his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and concentrate more on poker.

The real improvement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would frequently compete against each other. Howard had access into several of the foremost players in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of NL texas hold’em.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer moved to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
