Do you ever get that itch? The itch to bet, to head to the nearest betting house, to discover a great stakes game of Texas hold’em, to sit at a Black-jack table for hours on end. I love that itch. And I really like to scratch it.
I also really like to watch individuals bet. No 2 poker faces seem alike. When I wager I like to think I put on a poker face which is impassable. But I know I have certain actions. For one, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I bet on poker or Chemin de fer. And then I chain smoke. Except I chain smoke whether I am succeeding or losing, whether I have a very good hand or bad.
I once bet within a weekly poker game. The game was generally five card draw. There was a player who wagered with us each and every week who often wore a hat. When he was given a good hand, unconsciously, he would begin touching and playing with his hat. Needless to say, he never won.
The very best poker player I ever saw was a man who created much more movements and gestures at a poker table than anyone I had ever seen. He was impressive in the way he dressed. Often an expensive suit and tie, shoes shined and nails manicured. He was fastidious in this manner. And he was constantly brushing his pants or holding his hands or putting his chips in tidy little piles.
I use to analyze him for long periods of time. I’d attempt to see if I could notice his tell. Choosing lint off his shirt- did this mean he was bluffing? Arranging his chips in a very short pile – did this imply he had a great hand?
Years later I ran into him within a bar in Philly and we had a beverage. I asked him if he have been aware of all those motions he made or if they had been unconscious. He informed me that each and every individual thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everybody is usually checking out everyone else’s poker face. They’re trying to spot the the tell.
So his program was to provide them lots to consider about. His thinking was if they had been pondering about him selecting a piece of fuzz off his vest and what it meant they positive weren’t thinking about their cards.
His technique was diversion. And it worked for him. Never give up a method that operates for you.
