Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing range of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high, along with many trying for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
